“Don’t quit your day job.”
A phrase many artists and designers hear endlessly. Often as they spend those countless hours over the work they only dream of being paid to do. The idea of “making it” on your own as an independent artist is no easy feat. Yet, the vitality of having thriving artists within our community is being recognized right here in Minneapolis.
From years of experience from art curating, non-profit management, and now owners of their own fashion design brand, these lady entrepreneurs, Jen Chilstrom and Kim Jurek are changing the fashion industry as it stands, starting with their storefront here in the Twin Cities. Their partnership began in 2011, with an opening of Showroom MPLS in 2013, a retail co-share space where fashion, jewelry, accessories, apothecary, public art, and furniture collide.
With their deep passion for the inspiring designers coming out of the Twin Cities, the mission of Showroom is to invest in the evolution of independent design. The platform of the Showroom space, stems from growth within. As a co-share space, each designer featured is investing in the business and collaborating with one another to support and share in their brands successes.
Showroom houses work from a wide array of talented top Twin Cities artists and designers, including many that are incorporating repurposing, upcycling and sustainability into their work. Here are a few of our favorites…
Twin Sister’s Kaja and Zoe, offer a refreshing, eco-conscious alternative in women’s fashion, starting with yoga apparel. They have recently expanded designs to additional lines of one-of-a-kind garments and wedding gowns.
Julia Moss Designs is a repurposed vintage and home accessory line that mixes classic elegance with a rock and roll twist.
