February 21st, this coming Thursday, there are two events that SOL is endorsing and enthusiastically encouraging all of you to attend!
The first is an hour long seminar hosted by the University of Minnesota – Professor Sandy Black, a very prominent educator and author in the sustainable fashion movement. From 5 to 6pm Black will be speaking in McNeal Hall, and it is our honor to have such an influential person come to the Twin Cities. The opportunity to hear Black speak on this subject is an amazing one, many members of the Sol Inspiration’s staff and board will be taking full advantage of this event.

The second event starts directly after the seminar, Third Thursday is brought to you by the Minnesota Institute of Arts. An event hosted monthly at the museum, February’s Third Thursday is focused, appropriately so, on Fashion. From 6 to 9pm the museum will be filled with fun events ranging from a ‘Strut Your Stuff’ runway show, to a Two Birds Vintage photo booth, to music by Mayda.
SOL is specifically excited about the retro runway show that is featuring several local vintage shops, including b. resale, Scout Vintage and Lost & Found. It is very noteworthy that the MIA has decided to honor and promote the Twin Cities’ culture of vintage fashion. Not even a month ago the Star Tribune did a piece about the Twin Cities consignment world and although we disagree with the statement made about ‘throwing clothes away’ we do salute the Tribune for making mention of our city’s progressive consumerism trends.
The notion of sustainable fashion seems to be paradoxical – how can fashion ever be sustainable, with its focus on novelty and obsolescence? Join us for a lecture on sustainable fashion and a book-signing of Professor Black’s 2012 book The Sustainable Fashion Handbook, available for purchase at the event. Sandy Black is Professor of Fashion & Textiles at London College of Fashion at the University of the Arts London.
Summary from the U of M Website
Sandy Black is a major contributor to the world of ethical fashion and has been on SOL’s radar for a while now, we even purchased a copy of her book prior to it being available in the United States. Check out our Instagram feed to see snippets from Black’s book – The Sustainable Fashion Handbook.
It is a large, beautiful book full of amazing pictures and information on every aspect of sustainable fashion. Copies of the book will be available for signing at Thursday’s seminar.
The Sandy Black seminar is in correlation with the University of Minnesota’s Redefining Redesigning Fashion Exhibit, if you have only read about it on our blog then you definitely need to take a trip down to the Goldstein.
